BACKGROUND
Three tracks using bagpipes, different kinds on each track and each artist is coming from a very different place. Kicking off with Kathryn Tickell, a virtuoso Northumbrian pipes player, whose song, 'Kate's House', represents the most traditional use of the pipes. Jah Wobble, ex-Public Image Limited, set up his own label when he realised he wanted to release stuff at his own rate (he's very prolific) and according to his own taste -- very eclectic, but always grounded on his powerful bass sound. His 'English Roots Music' CD is the surprisingly successful collision of the Wobble bass sound with the English folk tradition, but using a French pipes player, Jean-Pierre Rasle. 'The Cutting Edge' is a live album by jazz saxophone colossus Sonny Rollins that reaches a climax with his version of 'Swing Low, Sweet Chariot', featuring Rollins on tenor and Rufus Harley on bagpipes.
