BACKGROUND
The three I've picked are a crude attempt at a religious/musical journey; beginning with darkness, and ending paradoxically (with Mary next to the Cross) in optimism. None of the pieces (apart perhaps from the Jo Ann Kelly) are particularly musically upbeat which is deliberate. I only possess a poor quality tape recording of the JAK, (to my mind it's the greatest blues/gospel recording of all time) but Paul Jones has played it on his R2 show. I think the slow paced Scarlatti is a good link, as the music 'climbs out of the well'. The Scarlatti is a 30 year old Philips pressing, but I guess any K.238 would do, as long as the harpichordist treats it with the sensitivity it deserves.
