BACKGROUND
A meditative selection from 2002, 1989, 1973 respectively that each have, in their own distinctive way a chill, sparse clarity that warms, like a home fire in an igloo. Appendix Out hail from Scotland, fronted by Alasdair Roberts who more recently has brought out albums under his own name comprising of Scottish/British folk songs. This lone voice introduces feelings of isolation and fragility. Next is one from the classic album Gula Gula, this song (When I Win Against Fear)is the anchor for the selection and contrasts and compliments the accomanying tracks, here the beautiful vocal is not understated yet powerfully restrained and very moving. The final piece is an instrumental that continues the theme of ice-crystal clarity, a solo violin conjuring up a solitude in white wilderness, acoustic guitar and subtle keyboards accompany. Stomu Yamashta has to be included in my first selection as I think he is one of, if not, the first world fusion collaborator from the ! Rock scene. (Unable to find this on CD only vinyl)
COMMENTS
Frank Bishop, Glasgow, Scotland Worth it for the Yamashta track alone. Thank you Gordon! Have this on disc as I am not always at home to enjoy late junction so sometimes have the pleasure of sitting in the window of a coffee shop in byres road, and reading the sunday papers whilst listening to back editions of Late Junction. I was especially delighted to 'find' this selection on my discs! Shows the good taste of the Late Junction Listeners. Sat Feb 5 12:51:33 2005
Ian MacPherson (Winsford, Cheshire) An impressively well-matched, coldly beautiful selection which I enjoyed very much. Tue Dec 21 11:52:06 2004
Jim Grozier, Brighton. Lovely to hear Stomu Yamash'ta again. I had this on tape but I think it has since disintegrated! I hope it will become available on CD eventually. In the meantime it would be nice to hear some more Yamash'ta (I THINK that's the right place for the apostrophe!!) I hope Verity enjoyed it too - she stumbled over the pronunciation a bit so I am assuming it was new to her. Tue Dec 21 11:13:51 2004
