BACKGROUND
Csardas. Raw but exhilarating recording at a dance workshop linked to Billingham Festival in 1981. Dynamic leader/choreographer Sandor Timar was central figure in popular Hungarian Tanchaz movement and became head of the State Folk Ensemble soon after this visit to England. Toni Iordache, virtuoso cimbalom player, died in 1987. This piece is slow & free, and beautifully demonstrates his amazing technical and artistic ability.
I heard "Harrin's Heid" on one of A L Lloyd's BBC radio broadcasts and was moved by its powerful primeval undertones. Sharing Bert Lloyd's interest in both British & Balkan music, I'm facinated to see if they mix (segue?). I'm still trying to get permission from A L Lloyd's daughter to obtain a personal copy of his recording. The Beeb might be better placed to succeed.
