BACKGROUND
The links between these three are ecstasy and the voice.

The first piece is a field recording of a Sufi sect singing and moving, with the aim of entering into direct spiritual communicatioin with God.

I chose this piece specifically because Pharoah Sanders seemed to be on another planet when I first heard this in the 70's and he was seen as the continuation of the space that Coltrane had opened up.

It opens with a percussive riff and a theme laid down by the tenor of Pharoah and the piano of Lonnie Liston Smith. Then Leon Thomas's vocals and Yodelling!!! carry us along as the tension builds up to a great explosion before coming down melodically.

The third, is the collaboration between the late great Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan & Michael Brook. I know purists would rather have one of his more standard style tracks, but I believe that this holds the three together.

So there it is. From an Egyptian oasis to a modern electronic re-mix via sixties Black America. Enjoy.
