J.J. Farley and the Original Soul Stirrers: How Shall I See You Through My Tears (4mins 35secs) Album title: The Gospel at Colonus Elektra/Nonesuch 9 79191-2
BACKGROUND
These three pieces all represent the fusion of two different traditions: the Monteverdi song is given a jazz interpretation; the Byzantine chant represents the Arabic tradition of Christianity; and the final piece is from a Gospel reworking of Sophocles' Oedipus at Colonus. I think they work well in this order because the first two are very langorous and introspective, while the last is electrifyingly dramatic, which the contrast can only emphasize.
