BACKGROUND
Trying to locate where that overwhelming beauty and charm of the songs by Wendy Lewis and Bill Carrothers lies,I came to the thought that there is something in the relation between singing and piano playing here, that has so little to do with just accompanying, we'd better file these songs under the term "lieder". As for Lena Platonos's setting of the poem by the greek pessimist poet Kostas Karyotakis, I think it represents ideally a most interesting phase of greek songwriting and of Savvina Yannatou's carreer as well, that took place over 20 years ago. The transfer of cultural currents to Greece usually consists in just imitation, but I think Lena Platonos gives here one of the best examples of minimalistic songwriting and one of the best greek songs I know.
