The three pieces express a suspension, a moment of waiting which is epochal in their suspense, and also suspense musically, in the way they produce a sense in the listener of expectation, of what comes next, in the piece, and afterwards, when the music has finished; each is very much a piece of music in medias res, arriving from somewhere of which we are not aware, as if in response to some unknown, invisible event that the listener can only indirectly apprehend
