BACKGROUND
At the end of his very short life, Bix Beiderbecke composed four piano pieces that suggested he might be prepared to take his music, and by extension jazz itself, into new territory. He died before he could record all but one of the pieces, the famous "In A Mist." The entire repertoire survives on sheet music, and has been periodically revived most recently by the vocalist and arranger Geoff Muldaur, whose Futuristic Ensemble performs "In The Dark." The set closes with a gorgeous guitar arrangement of "Flashes" by Ry Cooder from his 1978 recording "Jazz." The fourth piece, "Candlelights" is also played on the Muldaur CD, and by Jess Stacy in a 1939 performance that is probably very true to what Beiderbecke would have performed himself.
