John Adams: A Final Shaking (3mins 43secs) Album: shaker loops HMV 5 73040 2
BACKGROUND
These pieces are religious music for the secular - spiritual works for the godless. All of the artists here describe their search for the stars in music. These pieces all have calm and storm - all embroidered together within the works to such a degree of perfection that they seem as perfect as nature herself - Agnes Buen Garnas mediaevel Norse song about the ghost horse Rosenfole swirls and soars in the high wind of Garbaraks sax accompaniment, Sigur Ros' Jonsie sings wildly in his invented language Hopelandish, to the sound of icebergs and howling winds outdoors, and finally, dizzilly, John Adams' dance for the Shaker cult whirls and trembles to a close as the dancers swoon in religious ecstasy. These three together sound like what it must be to be a seabird above the cliffs somewhere very beautiful, very Northerly, and very isolated. Little miracles of music!
