BACKGROUND
The Philosopher's Hands is a solo piano piece written in memory of Pandit Pran Nath's incredibly soft hands (Pran Nath was a great inspiration to La Monte Young, Riley, Eno, Glass, Lennon etc). Its simplicity harks back to the modal works of Riley's minimalist period. Another minimalist, Steve Reich, has been a huge inspiration to Japanese electronica ambient artist Susumu Yokota. Lapis Lazuli's pulsing marimbas are straight out of a mid-period Reich work such as Music for 18 Musicians. Reich was interested in medieval music such as Perotin - its strict use of rhythm and its meditative quality - as demonstrated by Ockegham's Introitus for his famous setting of the Requiem mass.
