BACKGROUND
"Chant" is the underlying thread in this selection. The first track is a plainchant Responsory taken from the "Office of St. Olav", a cycle of liturgical pieces dating from 13th century Norway.

It is followed by "Veni Care" a sort of meditation for strings on the plainchant theme composed by contemporary Norwegian composer Henning Sommerro and taken from the same album.

The playlist ends with the finale of the 1992 opera "Gilgamesh" by the Italian composer Franco Battiato. The final scene of the opera is set in Sicily on Easter Sunday 1240, and makes ample use of the Easter plainchant hymn "Exultet".

A number of similarities links the two composers mentioned. Both have an eclectic musical output. Henning Sommerro, respected as a church organist and composer, has also played in rock/pop groups. Franco Battiato belonged to the electronic avant-garde fold in the 1970's before gaining popularity as a pop star in the 1980's in his native Italy. He continues to produce "classical-oriented" works alongside successful rock albums.
