Jacques Loussier Trio: Bolero (17mins 10secs) Album: Bolero Telarc CD83466
BACKGROUND
I have chosen performers that I have not heard on Late Junction from diverse musical backgrounds. The track from Steeleye Span features a long and gentle fade out to the tradional melody which leads into the quiet opening of Son of India. This was recorded at the start of Jussi Bjorling's career, when he was in his mid-twenties, and already the phrasing is effortles and the tone is exceptional. Ravel's Bolero has always been a piece of music that I have hated (I much prefered the Bolero from the Concerto Danza D'Castille by Provenzano) because it seemed to repeat the same phrase for what seemed an eternity. Only when I heard the Jacques Loussier Trio play it live could I appreciate the original. Incidentally Jacques Loussier makes it even longer!
COMMENTS
Keidee, Devon I too prefer the Bolero by Provenzano. However I have spent most of the afternoon trying to locate the piece or indeed anything about the composer on the net. Apart from one site that offers the Concerto Danza and the Bolero, there is nothing! Sadly I was unable to access these tracks as non of my media players could open them...something about unsuitable data.
Any comments anyone? Sun May 1 18:18:56 2005
