BACKGROUND
A strong rhythm initiated in one of Bartok's lighter string quartet moments is taken on by Joni Mitchell, using a heavy African beat, before Captain Beefheart takes up the strength of the rhythm in a classic blues. See my previous entry for a complete cycle from Zappa, through Jaco Pastorius to Bartok, then from Bartok, through Joni Mitchell to Captain Beefheart. Strong rhythms and strong atmosphere link these selections; Bartok's 4th String Quartet being the piece that ties them all together. Classical / Jazz / world / blues / rock rhythms in a couple of nutshells!
