BACKGROUND
The first piece is from the song cycle 'Cantigas de Amigo' by the Spanish troubadour Martin Codax who flourished in the early 14th century. The music was rediscovered inside an old book by a bookseller in Madrid in 1914. In the 2nd piece Ashe Bhosle, the renowned singer of Bollywood films became Khan's shishya (pupil) in order to be allowed to sing the composition. The third piece is a song written by Lal and Mike Waterson and featured on the album Shining Bright. I've chosen these pieces because I think the modes used are very beautiful and soothing and it's remarkable how they fit together despite being from 3 different countries. I also love the rhythmic freedom in all of them.
