BACKGROUND
Modern Gospel, Classic Jazz and THE song from an sadly unfulfulled talent. Mindy Smith, a country singer at heart, delivers a song showing the depths of her astonishing talent. Rarely for me has a new artist shown talent like this in the first album but this is itfor me, with this track the highlight.
Jazz was a genre which failed to capture me - until I heard this. Recorded in 1959 this track has lead me to investigate a music form which was for so long a sealed book - I rue those wasted years.
I still remember the day in 1978 I learnt of Sandy Denny's demise. I spent the next weeks and months revisiting all of those early wonderful Fairport albums and thinking then, as I do now, what a huge loss this was. This, for me was her at her best - haunting and sad, with longing in her heart.
Perhaps, on reflection Sandy should follow Mindy Smith with Miles Davis last - I really can't make up my mind. If I heard all of those in succession I believe I would be in heaven anyway......
