The Caribbean Connection
Programme 1
Wednesday 18 July 2007 22:00-22:30 (Radio 3)
Soweto Kinch explores the relationship between jazz in the West Indies and today's generation of Anglo-Caribbean players.
Several major figures in West Indian music had a huge influence on jazz in Britain, from Jamaican saxophonist Joe Harriott, to guitarist Ernest Ranglin who, like his compatriot Monty Alexander, took a hand in shaping the sounds of ska and reggae. Soweto talks to trumpeter Harry Beckett, saxophonist Bammi Rose, and vocalist/percussionist Frank Holder about their music, and that of Dizzy Reece, Bogey Gaynair and Harold McNair.
