A week-long season of broadcasts to mark the 80th birthday of Sir Charles Mackerras, including performances by the BBC Philharmonic, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Welsh National Opera, English National Opera and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
In the week of his 80th birthday, BBC Radio 3 celebrates the conductor dubbed ‘the musicians’ musician’. Each evening, in Opera and Performance on 3, Donald Macleod, in conversation with Sir Charles Mackerras, presents a selection of memorable performances spanning the conductor’s distinguished career. Highlights include, on the day of his birthday, an all-Dvorak programme with the Czech Philmarmonic, but we start with one if his favourite operas, Mozart’s Idomeneo. To launch the week, Music Matters profiles the conductor as seen through the eyes of some of those most closely associated with him.
