Visitor Why do you love this building?:
I have lived in Norwich for many years but only recently "discovered" Surrey House, the headquarters of Norwich Union. It seems to be one of the city's best kept secrets. When I walked in for the first time my jaw dropped at the splendour of the marble interior.
The outside is fairly imposing Edwardian palladian, but the interior is just overwhelming. It is a stunning piece of early 20th century design, using massive quantities of 15 varieties of marble. By chance, the architect, George Skipper, acquired a consignment of marble originally destined for Westminster Cathedral.
He used it with great imagination to create an environment which would project the company's reliability. Skipper was a contemporary of Gaudi, and the audacity of the two men bears comparison.
