Neal Cannell Building:
Midland Hotel Location:
St Pancras Station, London What is your relationship to this building?:
The Midland Hotel is a welcome sight, as it serves as a finishing line for many a tortuous rail journey terminating at Kings Cross. Why do you love this building?: The Midland Hotel epitomises the Victorian approach to what should be a functional, almost municipal building. Instead of creating a square, staid box in which people could sleep, Gilbert Scott designed an icon that is stunning to look at, both due to its pure scale, and as a consequence of its array of gothic windows, arches and turrets. The crescent frontage is the perfect complement for the soaring, elegant lines of the arched station canopy behind it. A national treasure to be preserved at all costs.
