Tenant Why do you love this building?:
I love taking photographs of the Piece Hall The outside is plain, even slightly forbidding as there are no windows in the exterior walls. Two of the three gates are also plain.
Every time I walk through the gates I feel my spirits lift - even if it's raining. There is something about the openness of the courtyard which makes me feel welcome. Although surrounded on four sides by galleries, the courtyard doesn't feel at all hemmed in. Each gallery contains small shops - originally used for selling pieces of cloth - with a walkway on the courtyard side. The balconies are ideal for viewing events in the courtyard while giving a degree of protection from the weather, and I often make good use of them when taking photographs. The Piece Hall was an important part of the economic life of Halifax when it opened in 1779. It still has an important economic role to play but now it is also a cultural venue for a variety of events as well as housing an Art Gallery and Arts Resource Centre.

What a lovely building! I must visit it; it looks timeless, as if it could have been built in Ancient Greece or last year.

Anne Boyce Your comments on this building:
I agree with all Stephanie's comments. I moved up to Halifax 15 years ago, and my then husband took me to see it for the first time - he made me walk in with my eyes closed and then told me to open them. Talk about overwhelmed! Since then I have attended 'dos' as the Piece Hall, and also played there with local brass bands. It really is the Jewel in the Crown of Halifax - and like most jewels, it is hidden behind other buildings, and needs to be found to be appreciated.
