Daniel Vockins Building:
The Millenium Dome Location:
London What is your relationship to this building?:
I have visited it several times in its many applications as a venue for parties, exhibitions and festivals. I have also admired it from afar on the Docklands Light Railway and various motorways and roads surrounding it. Why do you love this building?: Buildings become memorable because they have made a visible profound statement, perhaps in their shape or even in their function, and I think this building does both. Forget for a minute the fiasco of the Dome, forget the endless arguments on cost and study for a second. Look at the huge statement it makes - sitting out on its own in the middle of the river commanding the attention of thousands travelling to and from work every day with its raw unadulterated JCB yellow supports and wires, yet pure natural beauty. Whether you love or hate this building you cannot ignore it and if you look at most of the buildings which have survived the test of time the same is true. This building not only looks great but is also defining a new way of living. Not only is it terribly environmentally efficient but it also sets a new precedent for flexibility.
