Richard Cooper Building:
Coventry Cathedral Location:
Coventry What is your relationship to this building?:
I have loved it from childhood, and especially when I read the book by Basil Spence on it's design and construction. It was the first time I discovered meaning in a building, which I see all to little. Why do you love this building?:
Firstly the ethos it represents - to establish bridges, between the old and new, between warring peoples, between people and God, and between people and the building itself.
The space inside is massive, yet full of detail that draws the eye, and then the feet, to discover the artwork and religious symbols.
The contents use and display magnificently some superb examples of British Art from the Sixties.
The building is closed from many angles, yet one wall is completely glass, allowing views from a public place into the main body of the cathedral.
The careful play of light and angle of the windows is captivating, and the full effect of the windows is not seen until you reach the front of the church.
The building is used and there for people to use.
