Stelios Vassileou Building:
Broadway Tower Location:
Worcestershire/Gloucestershire Borders What is your relationship to this building?:
Visitor. Why do you love this building?: The British (and, possibly, above all, the English) excel at follies - this is probably the greatest, most whimsical folly of all (even more so than another favourite of mine, Brizlee Tower in Northumberland).
Broadway Tower was built in 1797 by the 6th Earl of Coventry for his wife. She apparently wanted a tower to be built so that she could see, from her home in Worcester, a beacon lit upon it.
I love the view from the hill upon which the tower is bult, and the peacefulness of its surroundings. To me, it represents what is good about "Middle England" - so often this term is used in a derogatory way.
