 | | RADIO 2 FOLK SEASON | | | 50 YEARS OF SIDMOUTH FOLK FESTIVAL Tuesday 10 August 2030-2130
Ralph McTell marks the 50th anniversary of the Sidmouth Folk Festival with a special programme tracing the history of this unique festival.
Ralph looks at Sidmouth's humble beginnings as a get-together for a couple of dozen morris dancers to its present-day status as one of the most important international music festivals in Europe.
For fifty weeks a year Sidmouth is a quiet, picturesque, traditional seaside town on the south Devon coast. For ten days in August though, it is overrun by dancers, players, singers and tens of thousands of music fans, who are treated to a rich variety of entertainment ... from traditional English folk music to African dance, workshops and all-night pub sessions.
Among the contributors to the programme we hear from stalwarts of Sidmouth over the years, Martin Carthy and Norma Waterson as well newcomer Jim Moray, we also find out what has led to the festival's longevity ... and just what the locals think of their annual invasion.
The show will be available on the Radio Player for 7 days after transmission.
