| | On 30th October 2002 a lone gunman put an end to 20 years of one of the most innovative and influential Hip Hop trios of all time. |
| From their humble beginnings in Hollis, Queens, Run-DMC changed the face of music, bringing Hip Hop out of the underground.
Run (Joseph Simmons), DMC (Darryl McDaniels) and Jam Master Jay (Jason Mizell) grew up in the middle class district of Hollis in Queens, New York, but long before graduating from school the lure of the block parties and emerging Hip Hop scene had set them on the path for stardom.
By the time they released their second album 'King Of Rock' in 1985 they were the biggest Rapstars in the US. When they released their 1986 album 'Raising Hell'' which included the Aerosmith collaboration single 'Walk This Way' (which also revived the flagging fortunes of Aerosmith) they had become mainstream music stars the world over.
However by the late 80's their rise to the top was slowing and personal problems were starting to drag the group down. Their struggle through these times lead both Run and DMC to become born again Christians (Run also later became a minister) and their experiences were documented on their 1993 'Down With The King' album, the comeback they were looking for.
Having put their hell raising days behind them the trio concentrated on helping and developing the people that mattered to them most: the residents of Hollis. Jam Master Jay even started his own label to promote new and talented rappers - 50 Cent, currently the biggest rapper in the world, was one of his prodigies. In 2002 Run DMC were riding high again, on massive tours of the US with Aerosmith and Kid Rock and receiving heroes welcomes at every date. However, while on a break from touring and while back in his own recording studio Jam Master Jay was shot and killed. | |
