The prize is a major boost for a career in music. The prize is a major boost for a career in music. The winning individual, duo or group will record a session for The Mike Harding Show, perform at the Cambridge Folk Festival, Towersey Village Festival and Fairport’s Cropredy Convention next summer, and receive a year’s free membership to the Musicians’ Union.

The competition has given breaks to Jim Moray, Tim van Eyken and Uiscedwr. Current trophy-holders Last Orders have gone on to achieve major festival appearances since winning the award. John Tams said of the band: "They have a maturity of style that belies their youth - a sound that is greater than the sum of its parts and best of all a joy in sharing their music with others.
