THE YOUNG FOLK AWARD FINALISTS 2009

After an outstanding semi-final audition concert in Stratford-Upon-Avon, contestants in the 2009 Young Folk Award were whittled down to a final six.

    Jaywalkers
    JAYWALKERS

    Duo from Lancashire aged 19 and 15.
    Michael Giverin (mandolin) and Jay Bradberry (fiddle, guitar and vocals) describe their music as a mixture of folk and bluegrass; combining traditional folk tunes with bluegrass style arrangements.

      Lucy Ward
      LUCY WARD

      Singer, song writer and guitarist from Derby, aged 18.
      Lucy has just finished her A' Levels. After getting her first guitar at the age of 14, she quickly progressed into playing the folk clubs and open mic nights in and around her native Derby.

        Emily Hoile and Alice Burn
        EMILY HOILE AND ALICE BURN

        Both aged 16 and play clarsach and Northumbrian smallpipes.
        Emily and Alice board at St Mary's Music School in Edinburgh, where they study with Catriona McKay and Dr Anthony Robb and play with the Sage Gateshead's renowned youth orchestra Folkestra. Emily reached the final last year as a soloist.

          Tyde
          TYDE

          Trio from Northumberland and Scottish Borders who play guitar, accordion and fiddle.
          Tyde are Seth Tinsley, Heather Gessey, and Andrew Waite. They are based in Northumberland and the Scottish Borders and their music draws extensively on the traditions of those regions.

            Megan and Joe Henwood
            MEGAN & JOE HENWOOD

            Brother and sister duo from Oxfordshire.
            Megan (guitar, vocals) first stood on a stage to perform her own composition at the age of 9 and draws inspiration through her Mother's love of folk music and evenings spent at Nettlebed Folk Club. Joe (saxophone) is in his final GCSE year but finds time to play in a number of bands.

              Maz O'Conner
              MAZ O'CONNOR

              Ballad singer, aged 17 from Cumbria.
              Maz has been performing for around 3 years unaccompanied, and also appears as the guest singer for the group Last Orders who won the Young Folk Award 2 years ago. Her influences include Nancy Kerr and James Fagan, Chris Wood and Karine Polwart.
