Producers Note:
To say that I jumped at the chance to make a special on Trangressive Records would be an understatement. I was intrigued by the label and the diversity of its acts.
Transgressive Records dances to the beat of its own drum. 21 year old label bosses Tim and Toby are more likely to be found heckling one of their acts at a gig or moshing down the front rather than making deals at the bar. And it is this passion for their acts that has earned them the respect of such industry luminaries as Seymour Stein (former head of Sire Records and famous for signing Madonna, Talking Heads and The Ramones) and Rough Trade's Geoff Travis.
Formed around two years ago, Transgressive Records boasts a roster that most hard-nosed A&R execs spend their lives striving to discover - The Young Knives, Jeremy Warmsley, Battle, Ladyfuzz, Polytechnic, burningpilot, The Noisettes, The Rumble Strips, Good Books and Mechanical Bride. Past signings have included The Subways, Mystery Jets and Regina Spektor.
If there is a common thread between this diverse bunch then it is their desire to create something new and vital regardless of current trend - and wisely the music industry is sitting up and taking notice.
Whether you are already a fan of the label or discovering them for the very first time - you are in for a treat on One World this week. Tim & Toby sat down to guide us through some exclusive first plays, rare releases, b-sides and session tracks. Plus, there are some revealing interviews with the bands themselves.
If you are looking for a lesson in following your dreams - then look no further than Transgressive Records. Their enthusiasm is contagious.
