Producers Note:
One World this week is all about the largest festival in Europe - Roskilde Festival - with close on 100,000 guests, 180 performing bands and a host of side attractions. Roskilde itself is a major Danish city which was established by the Vikings over 1000 years ago. 2006 was the 36th Roskilde Festival and its music programme was wide and varied as you'll hear in the show itself.
A BBC engineer and myself made the journey over to Denmark to try and cover as much of the festival as we could in two days. Thanks to help from the national Danish radio station we were able to record many of the highlights from the festival.
As you can imagine the site was massive, but at the same time very well laid out. It was very similar to the Glastonbury festival, but with more thought given to the little things such as seating and decor etc. It also happened to be the hottest weekend of the year and helped add to the great atmosphere. We caught lots of great bands over the two days that we were there - including Two Gallants, Bellowhead, Wolfmother, Gogol Bordello, Mad Caddies, Orange Blossom, Primal Scream, Strokes, George Clinton and The Ex.
For the show itself we recorded a selection of different bands from the festival, including some lesser known Danish bands that were recommended to us. We also visited a small independent music stall at the festival and picked up some cool Danish tracks to spin in the show - we particularly liked the ones by Acustic.
The final part of tonight's show is given over to a competition to win a pair of tickets to this year's Big Chill at Eastnor Castle . The Chill's head honcho Pete Lawrence will be revealing this year's line up along with the all important question to try and win the tix.
