One Big Weekend backstage gossip

FaithlessThere was one big, excited crowd in one big tent in one loud city at Radio 1's One Big Weekend in Londonderry.

The audience was the loudest ever in a town starved of good live gigs - hardly anyone plays Derry and the last big show was Oasis a few years ago.

Fergie kicked it all off on Saturday, the dance day. He chose to play funky tunes rather than hardcore and he enjoyed it so much he says he might stick at it.

Faithless hold back (a bit)

Faithless were one of the biggest acts to take to the stage on Saturday and it's been a couple of years since they played in the UK.

As the show was being broadcast live on Radio 1, Maxi said he had to rein it in a bit:

"It was great fun, like really, really properly good fun. You saw people out in front you and all they wanted to do was have fun. And that's what I wanted to do as well."

"But at the same time I had to hold myself back a little because everybody's got a little 15-year-old boy in them and you're thinking, 'I'm on national radio and I've got a mic in my hand and I can say whatever I want'."

"So I had to just calm myself down a little bit, but it was great fun. It was cool, I really enjoyed it."

Franz Ferdinand's fret frets

Franz Ferdinand

Franz Ferdinand, meanwhile, had a few guitar troubles.

The band had an instrument nightmare - they flew from France with their equipment but the guitars failed to turn up.

So the boys had to borrow from the loveGods and Ash.

However, Alex from the band said they didn't let a thing like not having their own guitars spoil their gig:

"It's strange for us and it annoys us when we don't have our guitars and we can't hear what we're doing on stage."

"But I think that at the end of the day it really doesn't make that much difference to how you perform. We always perform with as much as you possibly can, put as much energy into it."

"Although we notice those things I don't think other people would."

Ash and Colin's snog shocker!

Ash

Ash totally rocked the crowd and frontman Tim Wheeler got more than he bargained for when Radio 1's Colin Murray joined the band on stage.

The audience went ballistic as the boys bashed out hit after hit. Colin joined them to perform guest backing vocals on 'The Boys Are Back In Town'.

Colin got so carried away after pretending to play Tim's guitar with his teeth that he went for a bit of tonsil hockey on Tim and snogged him.

Tim was still reeling from the shock well after the band's performance:

"Yes I got jumped by Colin Murray, it was quite unexpected. I've never been kissed by a man on stage before."

"Some weird things have happened to me on stage before but never anything like that."

"I sort of stuck in my tongue to try and repel him but it made him go for it more."

"I was quite shaken up for the last song. And my parents were standing at the side of the stage!"
