Torrential rain before the start of the festival left the site full of sticking mud. 'Dubhenge', a Stonehenge sculpture made from VW Beetles and camper vans, rose proudly above the quagmire. People were still happy to brave the bog and check out the likes of Massive Attack and Ray Davies.

Radiohead played what many consider to be one of the best sets of their career and the Prodigy, introduced by Paul Kaye in his Dennis Pennis guise, suffered from a few technical difficulties. John's first BBC TV broadcast set a pattern for the next five Glastonburies, as he and Jo Whiley giggled through links and interviewed musicians and comedians whilst perched on bales of hay in a tent. 1997 was also the year the Greenpeace Field was introduced to the site.
