Glastonbury Intro
John Peel began his well-documented relationship with the festival in 1971, when it was held under the name Glastonbury Fayre. Peel was a regular attendee, often taking his whole family.
1997
Torrential rain before the start of the festival left the site full of sticking mud. 'Dubhenge', a Stonehenge sculpture made from VW Beetles and camper vans, rose proudly above the quagmire.
1998
This year was one of Glastonbury's wettest, with more mud than you could shake a veggie burger at. Mud surfing and mud wrestling were popular sports.
1999
Have you ever detected a Lonnie Donegan influence in Orbital's ambient techno? John felt so, or at least said so in this footage.
2000
This year saw many gatecrashers, or fence-hoppers to give their festival-specific name, but true to the spirit of Glastonbury the party carried on, accepting all comers.
2002
Glastonbury was back after a year off and the brand new superfence kept all those with no tickets out, whilst inside Coldplay, Stereophonics and Rod Stewart headlined.
2003
Tickets sold out within 24 hours, but those inside could enjoy REM, Primal Scream and Radiohead. John, presenting alongside Jo Whiley, Phil Jupitus and Lauren Laverne...
2004
Line-up included Paul McCartney, James Brown and Oasis, but John didn't like to watch "famous people being famous" and focused on Outset, a group of 16-year-olds, and a 20ft sculpture of a scorpion.
2005
The events of 2005 ensured John would remain part of the festival he had loved so much. The New Bands Stage was re-named the John Peel stage in his honour...
