Big Weekend backstage diary

Throughout the weekend we dug the dirt, hunted down the gossip and made up a few things along the way.

Fake tales from the hotel bar

I was taken up a very dark alleyway last night! Not physically, but that's how I felt having been privy to some stories from a member of Radio 1 staff about the past adventures of Shaun Ryder. I can't say anymore.

Not quite in the same league as Shaun Ryder, but nonetheless fairly steaming, was Comedy Dave from the Chris Moyles show - last seen swaying slightly in the gents toilets

There's little doubt who was having the most 'fun' in the artist area yesterday. Yep, Dirty Pretty Things again. Natalie from Newbeat had to slowly retreat from her interview with Carl and co. as they started their own science experiment involving a can of shaving cream and a lighter. I bet Mr Barat was a right pain in his science lessons at school with his bunsen burner.

Everything but my brain.

Wire flex for my laptop. Camera batteries. AAA pass. All the things I usually forget to bring I've managed to remember which is amazing because the one thing I have left behind today is my brain. I parked it somewhere near room 521 in the early hours of this morning and forgot to pick it up after breakfast. As a result I won't be able to tell you the story of a member of our team receiving poetic texts from an unnamed TV personality at 5 in the morning. Nor can I fill in on who won what or lost a lot in the casino.

One thing I might be able to shed some light on is this story about an unnamed act making a secret appearance later today. I offered Matt a £20 bet that it would be the Proclaimers but he declined out of sympathy having scalped me yesterday over the cup final. I thought it might also be Take That so my eyes are peeled for a slightly overweight lead singer being followed by a pack of screaming mums. I'll be first to let you know.

A touch of glamour

Jo gets her massageJo Whiley's currently getting her feet massaged...and she is loving it. As big a grin as I've seen all weekend. None of the artists seem to have taken up the option of a massage or not that we've seen. It's probably 'cos they've all got smelly rock star's feet. Jo, of course, is the epitome of backstage glamour.

I just saw the Sugababes sound check in the star bar for their acoustic version of 'Rocks' by Primal Scream. After all the rock star boys wondering around the backstage area the 'babes have got this place locked down in terms of getting the attention of male eyes. Pink's going to be arriving soon though...

Starspotting

I've seen someone famous who isn't meant to be here. It's not The Proclaimers and it's not Deacon Blue. Huey, can I change my mind about the bet on the special guest?

High as a kite

The site Macho idiot... that's what I am. I needed a shot of the whole crowd so I spoke to the TV people who allowed me to use their crane. Now I didn't count on it being as windy as it was up there which was less distressing than the sight of all the men taking a leek by the outer fence.

Pink has landed

Pink. Oh, Pink. I wanted to take your picture and your security guards wouldn't let me. Call me, it's not too late.

The last hour has been filled with such photo based problems. Went into the photo pit when I probably shouldn't have been there for Yeah Yeah Yeahs and soon felt a hand land firmly on my shoulder. Run...

The Ordinary Boys have been driving around in a buggy backstage for what seems like most of the afternoon. I caught them mucking about in the artist area as well jamming away, and Preston was giving it some leather behind the drums. No Chantelle. Oh well.

I know who it is.

It's Chantelle. It must be. I've seen her boyfriend hanging around quite a bit today so it must be her. Matt... you sure you don't wanna £20 bet.

Surprise, surprise

Franz FerdinandAnd the surprise is...not Richard Ashcroft as many people have been saying here. The special guest was Franz Ferdinand. Four songs and they killed it. Take Me Out - the anthem of the weekend (so far).

Colin Murray introduced Franz wearing his kilt, and I was earlier treated to seeing him have his new garment fitted. Frankly I've seen Colin get his kit off that many times (the waxing, striptease, dressing as a woman) and photographed it that I'm now totally unfazed by the sight of his flesh. Happy days.

The rain arrives.

Are you sure you can't say f****** on the radio? Someone should tell The Kooks who let one slip whilst chatting to the lovely Edith. And Pink. She loves a brew. Good to see her taking a cup of tea on stage with her as opposed to a crate of light ale which is what I expected after clocking some of her entourage. Stories of her being a total diva were slightly exaggerate. She didn't have the 30 security men expected, though the ones she have didn't mess about. "If you raise that camera" he told one of our staff "I'll have you thrown off site". Ooooo...get him.

It was a bit like the a scene from 'When We Were Kings'. Within minutes of the fight between Ali and Foreman ending the heavens opened and before the fighters had left the stadium they were under 3 feet of water. OK - that's a bit dramatic, but within seconds of Keane closing the mainstage the rain that had been promised finally arrived in style. Whilst I think they would have been a nice addition to the bill I thank the powers that be Travis weren't closing the final stage. An encore of "Why Does It Always Rain' as the rain breaks would have been a far too cheesier way to finish such a great weekend.
