Bethan's Biography
Growing up in the middle of nowhere in the middle of Wales hitting the age of 16 and hearing the lyrics...
"We're a mess of eyeliner and spraypaint
D.I.Y. destruction on Chanel chic
Your school your dole and your chequebook dreams
Your clothes your suits and your pension schemes
Now you say you know how we feel
But don't fall in love cos we hate you still"
(Manic Street Preachers, Generation Terrorists)
...something was going to give in the young Bethan Elfyn !
Fast forward to July 1999; a few college years in the thick of the Welsh bands' revival of the Gorky's, SFA, Catatonia, Manics, Stereophonics, a few years working at Spillers Records ('The oldest Record Shop in the world... probably!'), a year-out working in Africa, a few years of student radio and college paper, a year of journalism training, a few years in a production job with the BBC in North Wales - and things were beginning to roll. Two years into a stint as a producer of a late night radio sessions' show, Beth was approached to present Radio 1's new Nations show, kicking off the rock '4real'.
Now Bethan presents Radio 1 In Wales every Thursday night with Huw Stephens, a position she's held for the last six years. She has DJ-ed and presented onstage at many festivals including Wakestock, The Greenman Festival and Radio 1's stage at Carling's Reading Festival. Behind the scenes she DJs with the Vinyl Vendettas, manages a band, runs a record label, edits an independent magazine, produces documentaries for Lamacq Live, and programmes for One World, One Click and R1 Wales. She presents In Concert for BBC Radio Wales, covers for Steve Lamacq's 'Lamacq Live' when he's on holiday and presents occasionally for S4C, including being a member of the panel on the talent show Waw Ffactor.
