Maurice Kirya

Maurice Kirya calls his unique sound Mwooyo which means soul in Luganda. It blends afro soul, r’n’b, hip hop and jazz elements but, always has Ugandan folk at its heart.

Maurice Kirya has had a long and distinguished musical career. He calls his unique sound Mwooyo which means soul in Luganda. It blends afro-soul, R&B, hip-hop and jazz elements but, he says, always has Ugandan folk at its heart.

In 2010 Maurice Kirya won the prestigious Radio France International Prix Découvertes which enabled him to embark on a major African tour and to perform in Europe.

He has released six albums, the most recent one, The Road to Kirya, dropped in 2022.

Kirya is also an actor, a businessman and a philanthropist. He appeared alongside Forest Whitaker in the global blockbuster The Last King of Scotland, and with Lupita Nyong’o and David Oyelowo in Queen of Katwe, and starred in the Netflix movie The Girl in the Yellow Jumper.

He has a branding and events company, a tours and travel company, and in 2021 he launched his own brand of coffee, The Sound Cup.
