Hong Kong firefighters searching for survivors

A huge fire engulfed a complex of high-rise apartments housing thousands of people.

Firefighters in Hong Kong are searching for possible survivors from a huge fire that broke out at a complex of high-rise apartments housing more than four-thousand-six-hundred people. Hundreds are still missing: more than forty are confirmed dead. Police have arrested three men from a construction firm on suspicion of manslaughter.

The US Department of Homeland Security says it has stopped processing all immigration requests from Afghan nationals indefinitely, after two National Guard soldiers were shot and critically wounded in Washington. President Trump said the suspect in the shooting is a man who entered the country from Afghanistan in 2021.

Pope Leo is today beginning his first foreign trip. He's going first to Turkey, where he's due to meet the leader of Orthodox Christians to mark the anniversary of a major council of the early church.
