We examine the dramatic incident in Hong Kong yesterday after mulitple high-rise apartment buildings were engulfed by flames, More than forty people are now known to have been killed with many hundreds still unaccounted for.

In Washington DC two National Guard members are in critical condition after being shot just a few blocks away from the White House. The attack - described by Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser as a targeted shooting - happened in the early afternoon on Wednesday. According to police, the suspect was shot four times at the scene, before being arrested and given medical treatment. President Donald Trump later confirmed the suspected shooter is a 29-year old Afghan national called Rahmanullah Lakanwal, who entered the US in 2021.

Nigeria's President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a nationwide security emergency, ordering the Nigerian Police and Armed Forces to recruit additional personnel to tackle rising insecurity across the country. These include an extra 50,000 new police officers in total. It comes as the country reels from multiple kidnappings of school children which have made international headlines in recent weeks.
