
Chile Cancels Two International Summits Amid Protests
Protests in Chile mean APEC trade summit and a UN climate meeting are cancelled
President Sebastián Piñera of Chile has cancelled the hosting of two summits because of severe social unrest. The Asia Pacific trade summit was to be held in mid-December and was expected to witness the signing of a trade deal between the US and China. The annual UN climate summit was to begin in December and the UN is trying to find a substitute venue.
Also on the programme: Brazil’s president Jair Bolsonaro lashes out at reports linking him to the assassination of an activist; and the Syrian refugees in Turkey in fear of forced deportation.
