UN votes for end to UK control of Chagos Islands

UN passes resolution demanding that UK cede control of Indian Ocean islands

Britain has said it will stick to its stated plan to hand control over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius once they are no longer needed for defence purposes. The UN earlier passed a resolution demanding it cede control within six months. The islands have been at the centre of a decades long dispute over Britain's decision to separate it from Mauritius in 1965 and set up a joint military base with the US on Diego Garcia, the largest of the islands. We speak to a Chagos Islander and a former UK high commissioner to Mauritius.
