Hurricane Irma makes landfall

Officials in a string of Caribbean islands have ordered people to evacuate as one of the strongest storms ever recorded in the Atlantic approaches.

The leaders of Russia, South Korea and Japan are to meet on Wednesday to discuss the crisis surrounding North Korea and its recent nuclear and missile tests. On Tuesday Mr Putin said he considered sanctions imposed on Pyongyang to be useless.

The prime minister of Lesotho has described the shooting dead of the head of the armed forces, Khoantle Mots'omots'o, by two other officers as a serious setback to attempts to restore peace and stability in the country.
