The US secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, has acknowledged that America may not be able to win the war in Afghanistan. At a news conference, he said the Taliban couldn't win either, and at some point peace talks would have to take place.

Angolans are preparing to go to the polls to choose a new president. The country’s President Jose Eduardo dos Santos is standing down after 38 years in power. But with his children in prominent positions in Angola, and the incoming president's powers weakened, Mr Dos Santos is unlikely to be completely out of the picture.

Substance misuse in people aged over 50 is growing at alarming levels in the western world according to a paper published today in the British Medical Journal. Alcohol and substance misuse in what's known as the 'baby boomer' generation is expected to lead to a doubling of treatment in Europe and trebling of treatment in America in this age group.
