The Fisher King

The Fisher King was a formidable warlord defeated by the Arcateenians and sent to be buried on Earth in the 1980s. But far from dead and determined to reassemble his armies, this warrior used an electromagnetic signal contained within a written message to communicate with his people. A message that turned anyone who laid eyes on it into a ‘ghost’…

Strong, powerful and standing at over 8 foot tall, the Fisher King was an ancient alien warlord of unknown origin with a blaster incorporated into the arm on his armour. Standing at the head of a mighty army, he invaded the planet Tivoli and to the delight of the Tivolians, enslaved its inhabitants for ten years! Ultimately, the planet was liberated by the Arcateenians, and the Fisher King was believed to be killed in the onslaught. In accordance with Arcateenian custom, a barren savage outpost was chosen for the Fisher King’s burial: the planet Earth.

My ghosts will make more ghosts. Enough to bring an armada. Enough to wake me from my sleep.

In searching for an explanation for the ghosts that had begun terrorising the crew of The Drum in the 22nd Century, the Doctor travelled back in time to the location of the base in the 1980s before it was flooded. There he discovered that the Fisher King was not in fact dead, but was the origin of the alien writing which doomed those who read it to return after death as electromagnetic signals (‘ghosts’) designed to transmit the Fisher King’s present coordinates to his waiting armies.

Realising that the entire planet was at stake, the Doctor tricked the Fisher King by destroying the nearby dam and causing the flood that created the lake under which The Drum was later constructed. The Doctor escaped by using the stasis chamber originally intended for the Fisher King to sleep under the lake until brought aboard The Drum in the future, reuniting him with Clara.
