Madame Karabraxos was the Head of the Bank of Karabraxos, where she had a clone of herself in every facility, claiming it was the only way to control her own security. But despite placing faith in these myriad versions of herself, such as Ms Delphox (pictured), she was ruthless enough to burn them when she felt they had let her down.

You didn’t bring any weapons. That’s a bit of an oversight…

In fact not only did she incinerate her clones, she voiced regret that they put up so little resistance when the death sentence came through. After Ms Delphox was fired she begged for her life but received no mercy and Karabraxos was both disappointed and amused that she had not opposed her. She branded her clone a pale imitation and even joked with the Doctor that she should sue. The Time Lord remained unimpressed, however. ‘Frankly,’ he told her, ‘You’re a career break for the right therapist.’

When the solar storm began to ravage the bank, Karabraxos grabbed some valuables and decided to leave, abandoning the Doctor and his friends, assuming they would be destroyed. But by this stage the Doctor had begun to understand the purpose behind the so-called heist. He gave the deadly director the TARDIS phone number and stressed he was a time traveller. He urged her to call him, predicting, ‘You’ll be old and full of regret for the things you can’t change…’

Sure enough, when Madame Karabraxos was elderly and on the verge of death she made contact with the Doctor and began a chain of events that resulted in the Teller and the one other member of his species reaching safety. Karabraxos perpetrated many crimes in her extraordinary life, but as it ebbed away, she perhaps found a degree of redemption…
