When the Doctor first met Mickey Smith he was a happy-go-lucky mechanic, dating Rose Tyler and content to live his life on and around the Powell Estate. It’s not surprising that he resented the Time Lord’s intrusion into his girlfriend’s life. Suddenly she was traveling through time and space with an ancient alien and worse still, he felt reluctant to join them, unwilling to face the strange and dangerous worlds they encountered on a daily basis.

But Mickey’s confidence slowly grew and his fears diminished. The Doctor saw and respected this change and understood when Mickey wanted to remain in ‘Pete’s world’ to battle Cybermen. He eventually made it back to ‘his’ Earth and chose to remain here. After a heart-felt farewell to Jackie, who had become one of his best friends, Mickey parted company with the Tylers. But his adventures were far from over and when we last saw him he was fighting a Sontaran alongside his wife… the Doctor’s former companion, Martha!
