The man the Doctor knew as Captain Jack Harkness was a former Time Agent from the 51st Century. When the two travellers first met in war torn London, Jack was operating as a con artist but during his time with the Doctor he became a more responsible adventurer, turning his back on grifting and helping out people in danger.
