Shilpa Kannan
Shilpa Kannan was born in Bangalore, Southern India. After gaining a degree in journalism, English literature and psychology in Bangalore, she completed a postgraduate diploma in communication.
Shilpa Kannan started her journalism career with the BBC in 2001 as an intern and started working in the South Asia bureau in Delhi in 2003.
Over the years, she has been working in various roles covering a wide range of subjects across South Asia. This includes the Indian general elections, the opening of bus services between India and Pakistan, the 2004 tsunami, the Kashmir earthquake, the abdication of the king in Nepal, the Sri Lankan crisis and the Mumbai blasts.
As the India producer, she handled television and radio newsgathering, based in the BBC's South Asia hub bureau in Delhi.
Shilpa's reports included investigating the case of child slavery in Delhi's textile industry, which resulted in the dramatic rescue of 60 children from Bihar. The critically acclaimed BBC documentary was screened in the Amnesty International Festival.
She has been in her current role as the Business correspondent with India Business Report since its launch in August 2007.
Covering business, she has documented the country's vibrant economy during its highs and lows. She has been behind many indepth interviews with the finance minister, commerce minister and many other prominent politicians, economists and business leaders responsible for influencing the country's economic policy.
She is interested in diverse sectors including agriculture, aviation, defence, telecom, manufacturing, energy and luxury.
She is a secret geek and loves technology stories - especially those that impact future sustainability and development.
As well as English, Shilpa speaks four other Indian languages including Tamil and Hindi.
