On the surface, Dan Hunter seems to have it all. Tall, dark, handsome. Pity about his demons…

He’s a GP who started out doing medicine to give him an identity and respectability, but has grown into a doctor who really cares about his patients. He played a key role in diagnosing Malcolm’s dementia, Lenny’s MS and was a huge source of support to Leyla through her alcoholism.

It’s a pity, then, that he can’t have a positive influence on his own life – like all addicts, Dan is in denial. He thinks he’s got his demons under control but, in reality, they have merely changed shape.

Dan had a bumpy first few months when he arrived in Shieldinch. He got on the wrong side of medical partner Michael Brodie by hiding that he was a recovering alcoholic. Dan and Michael partnership was further tested when he became consumed by a new addiction – gambling. To pay his debts, Dan borrowed money from Lenny Murdoch. Never a wise move.

Things took a happier turn for Dan when he decided to let go of his ailing marriage to first wife Katy and move on with Kelly-Marie. But, sadly, it wasn’t to last…

After a stint with Peace Doctors in war-torn countries, Dr Dan bounded back into Shieldinch in 2014. However, his homecoming wasn’t welcomed by everyone. Dan’s growing closeness to nurse Tatiana unsettled her husband, Bob O’Hara. And rightly so as Tatiana eventually walked out on Bob for a new life with Dr Dan.

However, her recent divorce from Bob has put Tattie under the immigration spotlight and her future in the UK is now seriously under threat.
