Digital Media

Enter the ever-evolving world of the web...

Where to Start?

If you like surfing the web, being socially savvy, and generally getting your news, updates, and LOLs online then a career in digital media could be the thing for you. The exciting thing is it’s an industry which is still expanding and evolving, and opportunities are growing and surfacing ALL the time.

If you think this could be your bag then get online and start experimenting, write a blog (tumblr, wordpress, blogger to name a few), become an expert in all things online, make sure you’re on twitter and facebook, and maybe learn some basic HTML (try sites like this to get you started: http://www.w3schools.com/html/, http://www.html.net/) which will set you apart from the crowd. The more you know, the more attractive you’ll be to an employer. You can learn lots of these skills from your bedroom, too.

Don't be put off by thinking you need a computer science degree to work in digital media. This may help you if you want to be a developer, or work in coding, but for other areas such as social media, having creative flair and a sound editorial head are more important skills. Having your own presence online will help you standout when applying for jobs in digital media - but make sure it's for the right reasons! Many employers now look at the social media accounts of prospective employees, so make sure you're giving yourself a chance. Thinking of yourself as a brand whenever you put something out into the internet will help keep your presence positive.
