Designer Matthew Hilton: ‘My personal London landmark is a roundabout!’
This Listed Londoner explains why he treasures the much-maligned Old Street roundabout.
Matthew Hilton is one of Britain’s foremost industrial designers of modern furniture, lighting, and sculptural works.
Hilton went to Portsmouth College of Art and then Kingston Polytechnic, graduating in 1979.
It was in 1991 that he designed the "Balzac Armchair" - now considered an icon of British design. It’s perhaps what he’s best known for.
He was previously Head of Furniture Design for Habitat and was made a Royal Designer for Industry in 2004, widely considered the highest honour for a designer.
